Yesterday we explored one of the most amazing moments in all of human history – the baptism of Jesus. What makes this moment so special, in part, is the fact that all three members of the Trinity are present. God the Father speaks from heaven, God the Son gets baptized and prays, and God the Holy Spirit comes down from heaven and rests on Jesus as if to say, “I’m for you and will be with you.” You can read about this amazing event in Luke 3.
What you understand about who God is is the most important thing about you. I hope and pray you know the real God…the God who is both One God and yet Three Persons. Each member of the Trinity is crucial to understand and appreciate. Each is for you and does amazing things each day for your ultimate good. What you believe about God will guide every decision you make. Make sure you know and worship the real God (because that’s the only God that exists).
Below is the ancient diagram describing the Trinity. Perhaps it will help in understanding this difficult concept. If you cannot see the image please click here: www.churchonmill.com/trinity.

Thankful,
Chuck

One of the most unique byproducts of God’s kindness to us is repentance. You might typically think of God’s judgment or wrath as what motivates us to repent and at times it certainly does; however, ultimately it is the gentle, undeserved, completely unexplainable kindness of God that fuels us to turn from sin and turn to God.
Repentance refers to the changing of your mind. Basically it means that you change your mind over something you’ve been doing you now see must stop or something you’ve not been doing you now see must start. Sin is both offensive to God and harmful to us. Sin is what blocks us from seeing Jesus for who He really is and enjoying Him beyond our wildest dreams.
Sin is the problem, repentance is the answer.
A strange phenomenon has come over many Christians and many churches today. For some reason many people think repentance is for “those people.” It’s for the really bad people, not us. It’s for the sinner who is praying the sinner’s prayer, but after that…after he or she becomes a Christian, repentance isn’t needed much. And mature believers certainly have little to repent of. Friends, to be totally frank, that’s just stupid. Nothing could be further from the truth. The deeper you get in your Christian walk – the closer you get to Jesus – the more you should see you need to repent. Compared to a murderer or rapest you probably seem like a pretty good person, but compared to Jesus none of us can stand.
Would you thank God for His kindness today by asking Him to reveal sin in your life, repenting of it, and then gathering some fellow brothers and sisters in Christ around you to help keep you from falling into the same sin again? This will bless you beyond measure and bring glory to God.
In Need of Repentance,
Chuck

Today is our second Sunday as a church family with a new vision: Glorifying God through lives changed by the gospel of Jesus Christ. Part of this vision includes five distinctives or priorities. In essence, these five statements describe who we are as a church. A vision doesn’t mean much unless it’s put in practice. Here’s one way we are putting it in practice – this fall, every child who comes to TeamKid on Wednesday night will learn what one of the distinctives looks like in practice. Here’s the list below (the distinctives are in parentheses). The children’s ministry is doing a great job of disciplining kids and helping them learn what church is all about.
September 1 – Finding God’s Love – Luke 15: 11-32 (Gospel Centered)
September 8 – Helping Family Members – Genesis 13 (Devoted to Each Other)
September 15 – Dealing with Peer Pressure – Esther 3, 4, 7 (Devoted to Each Other)
September 22 – Controlling My Anger – Genesis 26:12-22 (Transformation Minded)
September 29- Being Kind to Others – 1 Samuel 25:2-35 (Devoted to Each Other)
October 6 – Dealing with Bullies –Luke 9:51-56 (Transformation Minded)
October 13 – Accepting Others Who Are Different – Acts 10 (Engaged in Community & World)
October 20 – Studying the Bible – 2 Timothy 1:5-6 – (Bible Believing)
October 27 – Fall Fun Night – We’ve Got Talent
November 3 – Telling Others about Jesus – Acts 25-26 (Engaged in Community & World)
November 10 – Being Happy When Others Succeed – 1 Samuel 18:1-14 (Devoted to Each Other)
November 17 – Learning to Pray – Matthew 6:5-13 (Transformation Minded)
December 1 – Being a Good Friend – Acts 12:25-13:14 (Devoted to Each Other)
December 8 – Family Fun Night – A Night in Bethlehem
TeamKid meets on Wednesday nights at 6:30. Don’t miss it!

This coming Sunday is going to be a big day. I’ll be finishing up the sermon series we’ve been walking through the last several weeks. In this series, we have been exploring a new vision for Church on Mill which the Leadership Team is proposing become both the direction of the church and form our Church Constitution. So far, we’ve explored a purpose statement and the methods used to accomplish the purpose. This coming Sunday we’ll be diving into church distinctives. If none of that gets you excited, let me say it a different way: we are attempting to define exactly why we exist, what we are to do, and who precisely we are as a church.
Since the church is so valuable it required the shedding of Jesus’ blood to come into existence, it is paramount we know exactly what we are aiming for as a church family. In addition, we must never forget the stakes are extremely high when it comes to spiritual matters. There are dire needs in peoples lives that will only be met through missional churches who are content with nothing less than glorifying God through lives changed by the gospel of Jesus Christ.
If you are a member of Church on Mill, you’ll be asked to express whether or not you believe the vision, as proposed by the Leadership Team, is a Bible-saturated dream you can get on-board with. In other words, we are going to vote on this as a congregation. It will take all of us, by God’s grace, to live out this vision. It will require sacrifice, prayer, brilliant God-given ideas, and perhaps doing things none of us have even thought of yet. But it will be so worth it!
What can you do between now and Sunday? Read the vision if you have not yet, pray, talk with fellow Church on Mill friends, visit with someone on the Leadership Team if you have questions, and come Sunday ready for a historic day.
Prayerfully,
Chuck

We are making a huge deal about adopting a new vision as a church. ”What’s all the fuss about?”, you might be wondering.
There are many reasons why it is vital for a church to have a clear purpose, vision, and strategy, but the most important reason is that God has given us a mission we must not fail at. As Jesus told his disciples (and by implication tells us), “As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you” (Jn 20:21). Let that really sink in for a moment. Just as the Father sent Jesus to earth on an eternity-changing mission, Jesus is now sending us.
The spiritual needs around us every day are tremendous. A recent study from the Pew Forum revealed some amazing statistics: 49% of people living in Arizona say religion is not important to their lives; Only 5 states in the entire US have higher rates of non-church-attendance than we do; 30% of Arizonians do not believe with any degree of certainty that God exists; and 47% do not pray. Wow!
Friends, God has no ‘Plan B.” Local churches are His global plan to share the gospel. Our mission, should be chose to accept it, as to be a church family who glorifies God through lives being changed by the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This is a HUGE deal. We must not fail! That’s what all the fuss is about…
I look forward to sharing more with you on Sunday,
Chuck

Friends,
These are exciting days to be a part of Church on Mill! It was thrilling to hear the stories of changed lives yesterday through the video testimony and also the baptism at the end of the worship service. God is at work.
As most of you know, we are in the middle of a series of messages called, “What’s Next, God?” We are seeking God’s will – together – for what God has next for us as a church. After almost a year of intensive study and prayer, the Leadership Team is proposing an exciting new purpose statement and vision for the church. I believe this vision will be something God uses to both build on the great foundation already present at Church on Mill and propel us to exciting new experiences of His grace in the future.
So far, I’ve taught on the proposed purpose statement: Glorifying God through lives changed by the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Next Sunday, I’ll be teaching how we can, by grace, go about accomplishing our purpose. On August 15th, Lord willing, I will walk through what we’ve called “distinctives”, or who we are as a missional church family.
We have posted a document containing what we believe is God’s conceptual direction for the Church on Mill family. Please read it closely and pray about it passionately. Post your comments or questions here on the blog, email, call, or send me a note on Facebook if you’d like to discuss any of this further. I’d love to hear from you. On August 15th, you’ll be asked to express your understanding of God’s will in this matter during the morning worship service. Here’s the link: www.churchonmill.com/Proposed_Church_Constitution.pdf.
Expectantly,
Chuck

Last Sunday we began a very important journey at Church on Mill. After nearly a year of study and prayer, your Leadership Team felt it was time to release a new vision for the church family. I had the privilege of beginning that process just two days ago. The dream that will be painted for you over the next few weeks will include who we are, why we exist, and what we do. Frankly, I believe it’s the kind of vision that you will want to get behind and help accomplish, no matter what the sacrifice. God has a terrific plan for his church.
As I mentioned last Sunday, ultimately all of us – both as individuals and as a church – exist to glorify God. To glorify God is ultimately to give him the recognition and #1 standing he so richly deserves. We give him right standing through living lifestyles of worship and obeying everything he directs us to do. That’s why we exist. Period. In the words of the Apostle Paul, “All things were created through Him and for Him” (Col 1:16).
Does it blow your mind that our church and your life have the opportunity to glorify God? It sure blows my mind! What a gift and honor we have: not living for ourselves but living for God.
All too often church becomes about us and somehow God gets lost in the process. We settle for routine and comfort instead of being radical glory-givers. I know I am tempted that way at times. Let’s be a church with a Godward vision: Glorifying God through lives changed by the gospel of Jesus Christ.

If you’ve got questions about Jesus, we’ve got good news for you! This Sunday, 10:45am at Church on Mill, we will try to answer your questions according to Scripture. Last week, I finished the first of several sermon series we’ll be doing on Luke’s Gospel. We’ve covered everything from the events just prior to Jesus’ birth up to around 30 years old. As the most important figure in all of history, you can’t afford not to understand who Jesus is. And making decisions about whether Jesus’ claims are true or not and whether he accomplished what Luke says he did or not are the most important two decisions you’ll ever make. Come Sunday ready to dialogue about the man who claims to be God.
If you have questions but would rather not ask them on Sunday, feel free to post them here or email me and I’ll try to address them on Sunday.
Thankful for Jesus,
Chuck

Friends, in just a few short weeks something very big is coming! After 10 months of prayer and extensive study of the Scriptures, your leadership team has developed a series of theological principles we believe will guide Church on Mill for many, many years to come. These statements spring from the Bible so they are full of life, power, and God’s blessing.
It is our sense that the timing is now right to propose a new vision for the church family. Church on Mill has a wonderful heritage to build on and it is time to lock arms as a congregation and do just that. Why does Church on Mill exist? How do we fulfill our purpose? Just who are we aiming to be? In light of all God has show us from Scripture and in light of our growing sense of God’s unique direction for Church on Mill, I will begin a series of messages aiming to answer these questions on July 25th. You will have the opportunity to hear the proposed statements, prayerfully consider them, and express your understanding of God’s will.
Personally I must tell you I love these kinds of moments. When God graciously gives his people a strong sense of his direction, truly great things are right around the corner! Begin praying now both for your church family and your own heart. Mark your calendars for July 25th!
Anticipating Great Things,
Chuck

Hello Friends,
I hope you are planning to be in the worship service this coming Sunday. We will have a terrific time of singing and fellowship, as always. Then we will aim to tackle one of the two most important events in human history – the birth of Jesus Christ. Whether you think you’ve heard it all before or the concept of God coming to earth is new to you, I believe God has something to say to you this Sunday! Finally, we will take the Lord’s Supper together to remember that the reason Jesus came to earth was to die. The baby did not stay in the stable: he went to the cross. Lord willing, it will be a very meaningful Sunday and jumpstart a very meaningful week. Next week is VBS! I hope you are praying already for this life-changing 5 day event. Scores of volunteers and kids will be on the church campus for an unforgetable time of fun and exploring God’s Word.
My family was back in Oklahoma for the last week visiting family and friends. I think our parents noticed Jill and I were there, but I’m quite confident they noticed the grandkids! While driving home from the airport last night, I thanked God for the Valley – specifically for you. As we approach our first anniversary of serving at Church on Mill, it is amazing how quickly this has become home. God has blessed us. Thank you!
See you Sunday,
Chuck
