In the next few months, we will begin a stewardship campaign intended to generate funding for our
new education building. We have selected the name The Next Chapter - Hope For The Future for this adventure.
As we prepare to enter this campaign, we want to address some basic questions you may have.
Why are we doing this?
Our first thoughts go to the houses we have been using for discipleship classes for the last 30 years or so.
They are marginally adequate for the purpose of sheltering our children from the elements, and they are
definitely humble. But, with inadequate plumbing, heating, and cooling, they do not serve as effective
tools to reach and minister to the growing community which is downtown Tempe. So this campaign will fund new
education space to more effectively reach out to meet the needs of the community around us, especially the
need to know Jesus.
More important than the building, which could be funded through commercial loans and long-term
debt, is the aspect of discipleship that we wish to grow here. We believe that God is more than capable of
providing funding for this building, and that He has ALREADY blessed His children here with the means to do so.
We want to grow to the point that we fully agree with God and trust Him for this, to see what He does, and to give
Him all the glory and credit.
Why are we doing this now?
We have decided as a church body that we need to replace the houses as soon as possible. This is
necessary even though we are in the midst of searching for a new senior pastor. We believe that obedience
to and faith in God is important regardless of external circumstances. We actually believe this is the ideal
time to step out in faith. We are moving into The Next Chapter, a time where we are not hesitant to follow
God's leadership.
Is the leadership of the church supporting this?
The Executive Leadership Team is fully supportive of this campaign. Several leaders are currently involved in
organizing the campaign. This stewardship campaign will be a key focus of 2008.
What will this campaign be like?
As a church, we have some beliefs that undergird everything we are and do. We believe that salvation comes
through faith in Jesus Christ and God's overwhelming grace. We believe that we are called to be disciples
and to make disciples. We believe that God is the Creator and Provider of all things, while He has placed
man in a role of steward, or manager, of His creation. Combining all of these means that we do not believe
that our giving builds up our standing or favor with God. Instead it is part of being His disciple and growing
His kingdom, an act of faith demonstrating that all that we manage is really His and under His control.
When we talk about The Next Chapter and Hope For The Future, we will emphasize spiritual growth in
the areas of faith and stewardship, hoping for each person to find the way God wants them to grow in these areas.
We will have a four-week focus on the spiritual disciplines of stewardship and giving, sermons related to these
topics, and personal prayer and study emphases. We will ask you to seek out what God would have you give
towards the building over a three-year period, and to make that known anonymously. We will have small-group
meetings in various homes to give opportunity for questions and clarification. We will culminate the campaign
with a celebration praising God for His providence.
What will be expected of me?
First of all, pray for wisdom regarding your involvement in the campaign. There is a lot of work to be done
and you may be asked (or you can volunteer) to get involved with one of the many teams. We want all of Church
On Mill to study and grow through the campaign, listening to the Holy Spirit. God knows the church's financial
needs, and He knows your needs and capabilities. He will tell you His will for you regarding any contributions
you may make. We will challenge you to be obedient, but exactly what that means in your life is between you and God.
